Moving on Out
[Re: "Debutantes in de 'Hood," vol. 5 no. 36]

It’s sad to see that gentrification is spreading like a wildfire on Waterloo. To wit, the L.A. Times did an article today on Silver Lake and a hip iconic designer named Dana Hollister. The article shows and misunderstands who is being displaced by the influx of cool, mostly white, hipsters. The article states that “The Latino and gay communities are diminishing as families move in.”

Actually, it’s the Latinos that are being displaced to Riverside, Moreno Valley and Palmdale. I’m sure if there were whites that were being displaced there would be an uproar. When it’s Latinos (particularly Latino families), it’s business as usual. Oh well.

[Re: "What I Learned from Live with Regis and Kelly," vol. 5 no. 37]

I caught about a minute of that show last week. (That’s the truth, I wasn’t watching it and didn’t think of it again until now). In that minute Kelly was explaining “s’mores” to Regis. Chocolate, graham cracker and marshmallow. Regis replied with something like “the things people come up with now-a-days.” As if this is new technology. I guess to him it is.

You should’ve seen the way his eyes lit up the day she explained how Nestlé’s QUIK works.

Guau! What a great article on one of L.A.´s best bands! Rock on Sharp Ease and congratulations on winning the Daisy Rock guitar contest. That`s super chido!

Unfortunately, the article failed to mention the Dervaes family’s amazing urban homesteading project ‘Path to Freedom’ which is now in its sixth year.

To learn more about the Dervaes family’s extensive, edible garden and their journey to live a more sustainable life, visit their informative and inspiring site at www.PathtoFreedom.com.
