Kid Row, Greening Tractors

Kid Row

The Los Angeles Mission, one of skid row’s busiest homeless shelters, will hold a block party for homeless and needy children on Saturday, Sept. 9. TV celebrities and volunteers will help the Mission give kids a reprieve from the health issues and stress caused by living on the streets. Game booths, face painting and an inflatable slide will fill the streets of what the Mission calls “Hope Central.” Donated school supplies and backpacks will be handed out, alongside free medical and dental screenings.

The Los Angeles Mission’s End of Summer Block Party is the largest of its kind in downtown L.A. and will take place at 11 a.m. at the corner of 5th and Wall streets. (Staff)

Greening Tractors

This week the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, announced a collaboration with the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach to develop and test hybrid equipment for the tractor vehicles that unload shipping containers. The two-year project hopes to put in place “green” technology and will cost an estimated $1.2 million.

According to port officials, the new equipment is estimated to reduce air pollution emissions by 93 percent—including a cut of 19 tons of nitrogen oxide and 200 pounds of particulate matter. The project falls under the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan. (Staff)
